varicose veins laser surgery treatment aftercareAlthough varicose veins are not often harmful to your health, they are unsightly. For those that simply must have something done about them, most people choose laser treatment. The more you know about varicose veins laser surgery treatment aftercare, the better equipped you will be when making the decision to seek this type of treatment.

Using laser treatment for these veins is one of the least painful ways to eliminate the problem. Varicose veins, or spider veins as they are also known, are thin blue, red and black colored veins that can be seen through the skin. They are predominately found in a person’s legs. Anyone who stands on their feet for extended periods of time is susceptible to varicose veins.

Laser treatment is considered an outpatient procedure, so there is no need to stay in the hospital. The procedure takes roughly 10-20 minutes of actual hands-on time. No pain medications or sedatives are used unless specifically requested by the patient. Even then, it is extremely rare due to the fact that the treatment is relatively pain-free and may only contain mild discomfort. Doctors recommend laser treatment for small to medium size spider veins.

First, the doctor passes the laser over the varicose veins slowly. As the laser comes into contact with the damaged vein, the blood coagulates. The treated vein shrinks in size. The blood can now pass through the system and allow the patient’s leg to be free from the colored lines. Some patients may notice a darkening of the treated area immediately after laser treatment. If this occurs, the darkness will fade within 2-6 weeks.

If you have made the final decision to undergo Varicose Vein Laser Treatment, you must also ask yourself if you are prepared for Laser Treatment aftercare. You need to know exactly what to do to protect your investment and your health.

The doctor may wrap your legs in compression bandages, which you should continue wearing for a day or two days following the treatment. You can take them off when sleeping or showering. Speaking of showering, make sure that the water temperature is not too hot.

The best part of the latest advances in laser technology is that they leave minimal and temporary side effects. After arriving home, patients should rest for the remainder of the day. You might feel a bit burning or sting in your leg (or legs), but it’s usually just a mildly uncomfortable sensation. You may take a painkiller (again, a mild one) if the sensation turns to ache or pain.

Exercise

It may sound faulty, but doctors recommend light exercise for all patients recovering from varicose veins laser treatment. This is because inactivity raises the likelihood of blood clots forming and putting your health at risk. Also avoid sitting or standing for long time periods, but feel free to take short walks as they will improve your blood circulation.

Sun Exposure

Avoid sun exposure following the treatment or at least limit your sun exposure to a shorter period of time and use a sunscreen lotion.

Clothing and Diet

Lastly, you should be careful about wearing tight clothes and crossing your legs when sitting. And while there are no specific nutritional requirements after surgery, you will want to ensure you are getting enough hydration. This will help with blood flow.  Patients recovering from laser treatment for their varicose veins should also avoid driving for a couple of days.
