Why Wintertime is a Good Time to Treat Varicose Veins

photo of wintery scene in the woodsAs soon as temperatures dropped, were you glad to cover up your veiny legs and feet? You may already know why wintertime is a good time to treat varicose veins. Even if you aren’t embarrassed when wearing shorts, the other symptoms of varicose veins could still bother you. The main reason, though is that you may be able to get away with no treatment at all. But you have to start early.

A Case for Compression Stockings

If you are diagnosed with a vein condition, the first thing doctors usually recommend is that you wear compression stockings that have a minimum pressure of 15 to 20 mmHg. After three months, many patients discover the discomfort and poor appearance caused by varicose veins is so much better, that is all they end up needing.

Exercise

The next thing doctors recommend if compression stockings don’t do the trick is exercise. The goal is to reduce your BMI to 35 or under while strengthening your legs with exercises for your calves and ankles. Elevating your legs while you relax can also relieve pressure from standing (or sitting) for long periods of time.

Diet

Changes in your diet go along with exercise, of course. The good news is that plenty of foods can help you manage your weight and improve your vein health. Foods high in fiber, such as oats, apples, flaxseed, carrots, berries, and barley, literally fight against varicose veins. Other foods with bioflavonoids like broccoli, spinach, kale, red onion, and peppers help to strengthen vein walls and improve the function of blood vessels. In-Office Care

When all else fails, the vein specialist at Grand Junction Vein Center may suggest a gentle in-office procedure. Minimally invasive and requiring only a short recovery period, both approaches we use result in minimal, if any, discomfort. Dr. Morse will explain the entire procedure ahead of time so that you know what to expect.

Getting varicose veins taken care of now will mean that your legs are ready for summer fun. If you still have questions about why wintertime is a good time to treat varicose veins, please call our office at 970-242-8346. We look forward to hearing from you!
